Joliet Junior College’s Fine Arts Department is a multi-disciplined department consisting of art, fashion merchandising, interior design, music, speech and theater. Students can take advantage of the several scholarship opportunities available for Fine Arts majors, and they also can gain invaluable experience through many of the special features offered through the programs. Students have the chance to join several organizations, including the JC Players, Community Band, Jazz Band, Chamber Singers, Percussion Ensembles, Instrumental Ensembles, Chorale, Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra and Forensics Team. Some groups may be participated in as a credit class with tuition charged or for non-credit with no charge. Community members are invited to participate in groups such as the Community Band, and of course, they are appreciated as an audience at many of the special events the department hosts throughout the year.

FINE ARTS  SPECIAL FEATURES
The Fine Arts Department offers a number of special features to its students.

The Laura A. Sprague Art Gallery, located on the second floor of J-Building, hosts several exhibits throughout the year, including a juried art exhibition for students. Other exhibits include works of alumni, faculty and artists from around the area and beyond.

The Fashion Merchandising students host an annual Fashion Show. The students put together a fashion show in cooperation with area merchants and using volunteer models. Community members of all ages, size and gender are invited to audition for a spot on the runway.

The Interior Design program sends its students into the community to work on a different project each semester. These students have the opportunity to practice their design skills and ideas by improving a facility, such as the Morning Star Mission.

JJC’s Music students have a number of groups from which to choose to hone and exhibit their individual talents. Each group gives performances throughout the academic year. The Community Band, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, is open to all district residents and rehearses Monday evenings in the fall and spring semesters. The Jazz Band performs two annual concerts and participates in the Elmhurst Jazz Festival. The Percussion Ensemble covers all areas of percussion instruments, including mallets, timpani, drumset, snare drum, ethnic and multiple set-ups. The Chamber Singers is an auditioned vocal ensemble. The Chorale is open to the community and rehearses on Tuesday evenings. The Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra promotes and challenges talented orchestral musicians by providing an opportunity to perform symphonic repertoire of a wide variety of styles and historical periods with the goal of musical excellence.

The Speech Team is open to all JJC students, regardless of major. Members represent JJC at intercollegiate speech tournaments on regional and national levels.

JJC’s Fine Arts Theatre is host to a variety of plays every season, including a musical and children’s production, each year. Theater patrons may choose to subscribe for the season. Subscribers receive preferred seating, among other advantages.
